Imagine waking up to the gentle sound of flowing water, stepping out of your camper or tent, and being greeted by a crystal-clear, emerald-green river reflecting the morning sun.

High above, the historic Ostrog Monastery stands proudly on the cliffs, keeping watch over the valley. This isn’t a dream—this is a typical morning at Camp Aquarius, nestled right on the serene banks of the beautiful River Zeta.

While many travelers rush straight to the Montenegrin coast or the dramatic northern peaks, the Zeta River Valley remains one of the country’s most enchanting, peaceful, and ecologically rich hidden gems.

To help you get to know our stunning “backyard” a little better, here are some fascinating facts about the majestic River Zeta and why it is the perfect companion for your camping holiday.

1. One River, Two Waters: The Unique Phenomenon of Camp Aquarius

1.5km from our camp, the powerful Perućica Hydroelectric Power Plant operates, creating a fascinating hydrological phenomenon. During electricity production, warmer water accumulated in the sunny lakes of Nikšić is channeled down into the lower flow of the Zeta River. In the morning Zeta is arounfd 10 degrees Celsius and in the afternoon, when electricity production starts, rises up to 19 – 23 degrees of Celsius.

This creates a captivating “One River, Two Waters” effect right at our doorstep.

Depending on the hour and power plant activity, you can experience two distinct currents merging: the crisp, chilly mountain spring water of the upper Zeta, and the noticeably warmer, sun-kissed lake water from Nikšić. It makes swimming and paddling here a uniquely refreshing and dynamic experience you won’t find anywhere else!

1. It is an Officially Protected Nature Park

The River Zeta is not just beautiful; it is an environment of immense national and international importance. In 2019, the lower stretch of the river and its valley were officially declared a Nature Park. This protection ensures that its pristine waters, lush riverside forests of willow and oak, and vibrant ecosystem are preserved for future generations to enjoy. When you camp with us, you are living right inside a protected oasis of pure nature!

2. A True Paradise for Birdwatchers

Did you know that the River Zeta Valley is a crucial international corridor for migratory birds? Out of 352 bird species registered in Montenegro, around 20% can be found right here in the Zeta ecosystem. While sipping your morning coffee under the shade of our trees, keep your eyes peeled and your cameras ready! You might spot majestic grey herons standing in the shallows, bright blue kingfishers darting across the water, or the beautifully patterned hoopoe.

3. Rich in Unique and Endemic Wildlife

Beneath the shimmering, liquid-glass surface of the Zeta lies a thriving underwater world. The river is home to 19 different fish species, making it a fantastic spot for catch-and-release fishing.

It is particularly famous for its salmonid species, including the brown trout, marble trout, and the softmouth trout (Salmo obtusirostris)—an endangered species endemic to these specific waters. The presence of freshwater crayfish and yellow water lilies along the river is a wonderful indicator of the water’s purity and life-giving force.

4. It Flows Through the Historic Plain of Harvests

The river is approximately 86 kilometers long. It begins its journey near Nikšić, briefly disappears underground through the karst landscape, and re-emerges at the powerful spring of Glava Zete before meandering beautifully through the Bjelopavlići Valley down to Podgorica. Linguists believe that the ancient name “Zeta” derives from early roots meaning “harvest” or “grain” (connected to the modern local words žetva and žito), celebrating the incredibly fertile lands that the river has nourished for centuries.
